Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri)

The 2nd of February 1591 is the birthday of a famous Italian Baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (means СsquinterТ). He got this nickname since he was a child, as he became cross-eyed due to a scare when he was a baby. Anyway that was not an obstacle for him to create his extraordinary paintings, many of which are present in the city of Bologna, where the painter lived and worked for over 20 years, in his native town of Cento (30 km from Bologna), and others can be seen in the best museums and art galleries all over the world, for example in the Gemaldegalerie of Dresden (Germany), in the National Gallery of London (UK), in the National Gallery of Washington (USA).
In Cento the new San Lorenzo Art Gallery was inaugurated on 18th June 2016, where the best paintings of Guercino were moved from the Municipal Art Gallery (closed after the earthquake of 2012)

n fact, 4 years after the earthquake, the artworks of the famous Cento painter, exhibited in the most important museums of the world, from Europe to Japan, returned to Cento. It was decided to establish the new Guercino museum inside of San Lorenzo church, an architectural jewel of the 18th Century, which now contains 12 masterpieces that returned to the city, 9 of them are of the property of the Municipal Art Gallery, and 3 of the Curia.
